Bipolar disorder is characterized by extreme moods swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). When you are depressed you might feel sad or hopeless and lose interest in activities that normally make you feel pleasure. When your mood shifts in the other direction you will feel euphoric and full of energy almost like you are invincible. Mood shifts can happen weekly, monthly, or yearly.

These shifts in mood can cause a disruption in social activities such as school, work, and leisure time. There are different types of bipolar disorders and a proper diagnosis is necessary in order to get the person with the right treatment.
